The cholesterol is unsaturated fatty acid. There are more types of cholesterol : LDL(low density lipoprotein), VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) and HDL ( high density lipoprotein ). LDL and VLDL are known as “Bad cholesterol”, because they lead to fast deposition of fats in blood vessels and arteriosclerosis. HDL is called “Good cholesterol”, due to its ability to inhibits the deposition of fats in blood vessels.2/3 od the cholesterol are produced in the liver and the rest is entered with food. The cholesterol participate in the:
- metabolism of carbohydrates
- synthesis of vitamin D.
- synthesis of steroid hormones
If there is high level of LDL and VLDL, and low level of HDL, the risk of cardiovascular disease grows.
